I Protomartiri Francescani

Eventi, San Gemini

It is a small group of friars devoted to St. Francis of Assisi. The sources report five courageous preachers: Berardo, Ottone, Accursio, Adiuto and Pietro from San Gemini. All coming from the Terni area, emigrated to foreign lands to spread the word of the Poor of Assisi.

They came to Saracen Spain in the 13th century to spread the Word of God in Muslim mosques. They were captured and tortured by Sultan Miramolino and taken as prisoners to Morocco. Firm in their mission, all five were beheaded in Africa on January 16, 1220. Their remains were brought to Coimbra, Portugal. They are the very first members of the Friars Minor recognized by St. Francis. On January 16th they are celebrated with affection throughout the Terni area.

A THEME CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD IN SAN GEMINI ON 24 JULY TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE ADVENTUROUS HISTORY OF THE FIVE FRIARS OF TERNI, INCLUDING PIETRO DE BONNANTI FROM SAN GEMINI, WHO RESIDED IN THE HISTORICAL PALACE OF EVERY FAMILY HOSTS SANGEMINI HOME.

The speakers of the event will be Professor Paolo Rossi, Father Isidro Lamelas of the Portuguese Catholic University and Doctor Daniela Gregori, with the mediation of Professor Dayana Nulli.
